William "Bill" Paul Werner, 83, of Homewood, passed away on June 11, 2025. Born on August 28, 1941, in Chicago, Bill lived a full and thoughtful life surrounded by family and simple joys.
He is survived by his beloved children: Jen (Paul) Sowacke, Karen (Jeff) Markert, Mike (Maddalena) Werner, Brian (Nancy) Werner, and Marc (Jennifer) Werner; the mother of his children, Joan Werner; and his siblings, Tom Werner and Joan McVady. He was a proud and loving "Papa" to ten grandchildren: Olivia Sowacke, Grace Sowacke, Abbey Sowacke, Emily (Markert) Torres, Danni Werner, Marissa (Werner) McNeil, Philip Werner, Stephanie (Werner) Lamb, Vivian Werner, and Tabitha Werner, and five great-grandchildren. He was also a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Bill attended Mount Carmel High School and went on to earn his degree from Loyola University. A lifelong learner and gentle soul, Bill found delight in many of life's quieter pleasures. He had a deep love for sailing ships, a sharp mind for the New York Times crossword puzzle, a steady hand at Mahjong, and a watchful eye for birds. He also had an undeniable sweet tooth, never passing up a chance for dessert—especially if it involved ice cream.
He will be dearly missed by his family and friends, who will remember him for his kind heart, quiet humor, and the deep love he had for those around him.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, June 18 from 9 – 10:30 a.m. followed by chapel prayers beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Tews-Ryan Funeral Home, 18230 Dixie Highway, Homewood, IL.
