Homewood, Illinois – We are saddened to announce the passing of Todd A. Smith, a beloved brother, uncle, and friend to many. Todd left this world on September 1st, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, knowledge, and unwavering patriotism.

Born on December 30, 1953, Todd was the son of Homer and Joan Smith, two loving parents who instilled in him the values of compassion, determination, and resilience. Todd was extremely proud of his parents, and their unwavering support throughout his life meant the world to him.

A 1972 graduate of Homewood-Flossmoor High School, Todd's academic journey led him to the University of Illinois, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1976. He continued his education at Purdue University, where he obtained his master's degree in 1978. Following his graduation from Purdue, Todd embarked on a fulfilling career as an engineer at Inland Steel. His dedication and commitment to his work were evident to all who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Beyond his academic and professional achievements, Todd was a man of remarkable abilities. He never liked to hear the word "disabled" and believed in showcasing the many talents and strengths that defined him. Todd's determination and resilience were an inspiration to all who knew him, as he embraced life's challenges with a spirit of optimism and grace.

Throughout his life, Todd's passion for education extended far beyond the classroom. He was a dedicated mentor who willingly assisted friends and family with their technical computer issues, sharing his expertise with patience and enthusiasm. His love for Macintosh computers was matched only by his commitment to helping others.

Todd's hobbies spanned a wide range of interests, from golf, photography, and radio-controlled model airplanes to a deep love of music, from classical to classic rock, with The Beatles holding a special place in his heart.

He was a devoted fan of the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bears, cheering them on through triumphs and trials alike. His patriotic spirit was undeniable, and he took great pride in supporting organizations such as Doctors Without Borders and the American Red Cross. His commitment to charitable causes reflected his deep love for the United States and his desire to make the world a better place.

Todd's knowledge extended to a wide array of topics, including history and science, and he relished conversations on these subjects. His family and friends frequently sought his advice, knowing they could rely on his wisdom and insights.

Todd is survived by his sister, Jill Smith; brother, Drew Smith; sister-in-law, Kim Smith; niece, Stephanie (Steven) Sistrunk; nephew, Blake (Kathy) Smith; niece, Kirsten Smith; nephew, Brian Smith; grand-nephews, Dean Sistrunk, Hayden Sistrunk, Hudson Smith; grand-nieces, Lola Smith, Adah Smith; and numerous friends who will always remember his generosity and warm-hearted nature.

Todd A. Smith's passing leaves a void in our lives that cannot be filled, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. As we say our farewells, let us remember the lessons he taught us about kindness, knowledge, and the enduring power of love for one's country.

A memorial service to celebrate Todd's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday September 10, at Flossmoor Community Church. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Todd's favorite charities, Doctors Without Borders, Flossmoor Community Church, and the Bobby Jones Chiari & Syringomyelia Foundation.

Rest in peace, Todd A. Smith. You will be dearly missed, but your spirit will forever shine brightly in our hearts. Your remarkable abilities and indomitable spirit will continue to inspire us all.
