Sylvia Sarmiento, age 85, longtime resident of Hazel Crest and Flossmoor. Adored Mother, Sister, Daughter, Cousin, Aunt, and Friend. Sylvia will be remembered for the grace and elegance with which she carried herself through life. Loving wife of the late Roberto Sarmiento MD. Caring Mother of Sylvia (John) Cifelli, Roberto (Mary Lou) Sarmiento, Carolina (Peter) Eupierre, Alejandro (Rosanel) Andrade. Beloved Abue to Johnny, Robby, Vinny, and Joey Cifelli. Cherished Tía to Mary Carmen, Raul, Isabel, Ana Lucía, Claudia, Jesus. Loving daughter of the late Alberto y Emma Andrade. Dearest sister of Irene Millan, and Alberto Andrade.
Born in Mexico City, Sylvia moved to the United States in the early 1950s. She enthusiastically embraced American culture but was fiercely proud of her beloved Mexican heritage. She met her husband Roberto whom she married in Corpus Christi in 1958. They moved to Hazel Crest where they raised four beautiful children together. Due to Roberto's untimely death in 1979, Sylvia was widowed at 42 with very little work experience or formal education. Nevertheless, she embarked on a successful 30-year career in sales, handling the challenge of supporting her family with incredible resilience and strength. Throughout her life, she devoted much time to volunteering– most recently at the Village Door in Homewood.
Despite many struggles, her faith in God was unshakable and her devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe eternal.
Sylvia lived her life to the fullest! She loved to travel, shop, and was an amazing cook. She was a generous friend who was always the first to lend a helping hand. She LIVED, especially, for her family. She was known for her beauty, charm, sense of humor, and her smile could light up a room. She was an overly enthusiastic collector of Tupperware, fleece vests, paper goods, makeup, and really, any reusable items.
Sylvia was loved by all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed. Her LEGACY will live on in the wonderful bonds she created with her family, her friends, and in her community.
