Soodchit Phophairat

Soodchit Phophairat, née Sooknam, lovingly known as “Susie,” was born on February 5, 1941, in Mae Sot, Thailand, daughter of Suriyun and Junkum (Kudvilarp) Sooknam. She passed away peacefully on November 2, 2026, with her family at her side, at the age of 85.

Susie dedicated her life to caring for others. She served as a dedicated nurse at Jackson Park Hospital in Chicago for 35 years, working as an OB nurse, surgical nurse, and a nursing manager during her distinguished nursing career. She also earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of St. Francis.

Beyond her profession, Susie lived a life of generosity, joy, and community. She was active in the Chicago Thai community, a member of the Thai Lions Club, and the Thai Nurses Association. She was also a devoted and member of the Buddhist temple. She volunteered her time and nursing skills to serve the poor and participated in medical missions.

Susie loved to garden and to travel. She was a beloved friend, known for her love of dancing and her big, radiant smile that lit up every room.

She was a loving mother, sister, aunt, and Yi Yi (grandma) to Sophia and Zachary, her pride and joy.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Manisa (Michael) Baker, brother, Jod (Jit) Sooknam, and her cherished grandchildren, Sophia and Zachary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Keirt, and her grandson, Ethan.

Susie will be remembered for her kindness, her compassion as a nurse, her service to her community, and the boundless love she gave to her family and friends.

A memorial visitation will be held Saturday, November 14, 2026, at the Tews-Ryan Funeral Home (Tews-Ryanfh.com), 18230 Dixie Highway, Homewood, IL. 60430 from 12:00 pm until 1:30 pm, followed by a traditional Thai funeral service from 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm.
