Robert J. Girard

Robert James Girard age 82, passed away peacefully at home on January 6, 2026. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Ann Girard and his cherished daughter, Christine Keiffer.

He is survived by his loving wife, Diane Zientkowski-Girard: his four children, Kimberly (Joel) Miller, Michael (Lylani) Girard, Michelle (J. Jewell) Jewell, Sharon Simcov, three grandchildren; Jennifer Balbuena, Cheyenne Miller, Addisyn Simcov and four great-grandchildren, Konner and Kasey Balbuena, Kyler Crick, Ruby Robinson all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.

Robert proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era. Following his military service, he dedicated 27 years of hard work to the Norfolk and Southern Railroad, retiring after a long and faithful career.

His commitment to service continued in law enforcement. Robert worked with the Thornton Township Police Department, where he later became chaplain for both the Thornton Police and Fire Departments, offering guidance, compassion, and steady support. He also served as an auxiliary police officer with the Homewood Police Department, where he became affectionately known as "Officer Smiley." His warm presence and friendly demeanor helped make daily traffic commutes lighter for countless residents.

Beyond his service, Robert embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. He loved bowling and dancing, and he especially treasured the time he spent playing the bagpipes with the Lake County Pipes and Drums, a passion that brought him great fulfillment and camaraderie.

Robert will be remembered for his dedication to family, service to his community, and the smile that brightened the days of everyone he encountered. His legacy of kindness, service, and joy will live on in all who knew and loved him.

Visitation Sunday January 11, 2026 from 1pm until the Time of Service at 4pm, at the Tews-Ryan Funeral Home 18230 Dixie Highway in Homewood. Military Honors and burial will take place on Tuesday January 13, 2026 at 12:30pm at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois. We will meet at the Tews-Ryan Funeral Home on Tuesday Morning at 11am and proceed in procession to the Cemetery. For additional information contact tews-ryanfh.com or call 708-798-5300.
