Raymond Urchell

Raymond J. Urchell, age 94, of Chicago Heights, passed away on May 12, 2025. Born in Chicago, Illinois on November 8, 1930, Ray was a proud graduate of Leo High School and a dedicated Army Veteran of the Korean War, where he served honorably as a Military Police officer.

Ray had a successful career as a Photo Engraver, working over 35 years in the industry. He was a proud member of both the Korean War Veterans Association and the American Legion, where he formed many lasting friendships and remained deeply connected to his fellow veterans.

Ray's life was rich with companionship, laughter, and a deep appreciation for those around him. He formed friendships that spanned decades—from childhood through his professional life and veteran circles.

Above all, Ray cherished his family. His greatest love was his late wife, Kay (Gaffney), with whom he shared 44 wonderful years of marriage and raised eight beloved children: Raymond (Chris Noble), Stephen (late), Daniel (Kathy), Kenneth, Scott (the late Jeanne Hiler), David (Janet), Victoria (Brian) Shapley and Cathryn. Ray was immensely proud of his eighteen grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. He also cherished his dear sisters-in-law, Patricia (late Richard) Urchell, Mary (late Larry) Deasy and Charlene (late Steve) Meyers and the late Margie (late Bob) O'Malley.

Ray's joy for life was evident in the little things—he never turned down an invitation to a family gathering, a veteran's event or just to go out to eat with a friend. Ray was especially known for his love of dessert. Root beer and ice cream—preferably together was a favorite.

Ray's legacy is one of service, devotion, and enduring love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A visitation/funeral will be held on Friday, May 23 at St. Kieran (Our Lady of the Heights) Church, 724 W. 195th St., Chicago Heights. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am, followed by Mass at 10:30 am. Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
