Raymond "Ray" Lyndorf Nielsen, age 95, born on August 31, 1930, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2026. Ray lived a life centered on faith, family, hard work, and service to his community.
Ray was the beloved husband of Wanda Nielsen nee Austin, whom he married on May 27, 1950. Together they shared many wonderful years of marriage and built a loving home in Homewood, where they resided for 65 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thorvald L. and Erna Nielsen; his brother, George Nielsen; his sister, Helen Ehlbracht; and his son, Michael T.L. Nielsen.
Ray is survived by his loving children, Peggy (John) Nielsen Riley of Flossmoor, Janice Nielsen Boyd (David L. Boyd) of Homewood. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Kimberley Riley and Michael Ordman of Orland Park, Megan Riley and Ray Morandi of Orland Park, Brian Riley and Alix Guren Riley of Frankfort, Nicole Boyd Pettineo and Scott Pettineo, Jordan Boyd and Jeff Panozzo, and David M. Boyd.
He was also the cherished great-grandfather of Kinsley, Michael, and John Ordman; Lucca, Taylan, and Mia Morandi; Graeme, Reagan, and Reed Riley; and Weston, Austin, Hayden Pettineo. Ray was also a great uncle to many nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
At just 18 years old, Ray began his career with Illinois Bell/Ameritech, where he dedicated 38 years of service before retiring in 1985. Retirement suited Ray well, though he never truly stopped working. Known by family, friends, and neighbors as the person who could fix nearly anything, he became everyone's trusted handyman. Whether repairing, building, or lending a helping hand, Ray found joy in helping others.
Ray was deeply involved in his community. He was active in Homewood Baseball and treasured the friendships and memories made through the organization. Faith was also central to his life. Ray and Wanda were devoted members of First Presbyterian Church for 76 years.
He was proud to be an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America and remained committed to the values of service and integrity throughout his life. Ray was also a member of Danish Brotherhood Lodge #35 and Masonic Neighbor Lodge #1169.
Ray will be remembered for his quiet strength, steady presence, generous spirit, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched through kindness, hard work, and devotion. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Homewood Paramedics.
