Penny Mitropoulos nee Petratos, age 93, was called home by our Lord on Saturday, April 8, 2023.  Our beautiful mother died peacefully in her home in the arms of her loving family following a lengthy illness. Born and raised in Filiatra, Greece until her teenage years.  Her parents fearing for her safety sent her to America to escape German occupancy during World War II.  She was the youngest of 14 children and came to live with her oldest sister Toula (Sam) Sampalis in Roseland, Illinois where she later met her husband to be, John Mitropoulos.  They lived most of their life in Chicago Heights, Olympia Fields and Flossmoor, Illinois area. She worked for a time as a seamstress and in retail for Gordon's clothing store and Rosalee's in Lincoln Mall she was an active member of her church Assumption Greek Orthodox of Olympia Fields currently in Homer Glen she was a member of the Ladies Philoptichos of the church and participated in many greek bake sales making thousands of desserts and breads for Assumption. Cooking and baking were her passion. She loved preparing meals for friends and family in her home.  She was Yiayia to many with a beautiful spirit and a generous heart.  She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband John, her parents Anthony and Ioanna Petratos and 14 siblings including her brother's Nick and Bob of whom she was very proud and loved to share stories of them in Greece, both being Generals in the Greek army. she is survived by two sons Peter (Dawn) Mitropoulos of Beecher, IL and Anthony Mitropoulos of Las Vegas, NV four grandsons,] Jay Kvasnicka (Amy) of Beecher, IL, Ryan Kvasnicka (Katie) of Chicago Heights, IL, Alex Mitropoulos of Mesa, AZ and Yanni Mitropoulos of Beecher, IL who resided with her and helped care for her during her illness. Also surviving Yiayia are 7 great grandchildren Joey, AJ, Alex, Elena, Aubree, Carter and Brayden and many special nieces and nephews.  Penny was a good, fun, kind and loving mother and Yiayia to many who will be missed by all.  She was ready to join all her family in heaven whom she missed very much.   Godspeed sweet mother. Fly high with the angels until we all are together again.  In lieu of flowers, memorials/donations can be made to Lightways Hospice of Joliet, Illinois or Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Homer Glen, Illinois.
