Paul Tufts of Flossmoor, IL, passed away with his family at his side on August 7, 2022 after a long battle with cancer. He was born to the late Paul H. and Gertrude (Meade) Tufts on March 21, 1943. Paul is survived by his wife Sylvia, two sons, their spouses, and 5 wonderful grandchildren.
Paul was a life long Boy Scout, following in his father's footsteps in earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He was also proud that both his sons earned Eagle Scout and serve their communities via scouting. As an adult, Paul received the national Silver Beaver Award for his extraordinary service. Paul received numerous other honors and awards as part of his scouting journey, including a Vigil award and his 50-year service award earlier this year.
Nature and outdoor activities were a passion for Paul. He hiked Philmont Scout Ranch several times and paddled through the Boundary Waters with the Boy Scouts. Family adventures included hiking, canoeing, and mountain climbing. He was thrilled at reaching the top of the Grand Teton, Wyoming and Mt. Rainier, Washington.
His love for adventure led to travels both domestic and international. Paul visited all 50 states as well as 97 countries. He enjoyed visiting all seven continents, all five oceans, and numerous seas, deserts, and mountain ranges. As an amateur photographer, Paul has thousands of photos from his adventures; yet he took more pride in relaying memorable stories from all the interesting people he and Sylvia met along the way.
Paul was generous and giving in his service to others. As an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Homewood for decades, Paul served 22 years on the Trustees and supported the church in numerous ways. He also volunteered at the Jones Community Center and felt an obligation to give back to those in need.
Paul's focus on family and service was demonstrated by his actions throughout his life. He led by example in the areas of service and commitment, and never missed an opportunity to sprinkle in some humor along the way. A memorial service will be held on August 20 at the First Presbyterian Church of Homewood with visitation at 10 AM and a memorial service at 11AM.
