Paul Sanchuk

Paul Sanchuk of Glenwood Illinois passed away at home Monday November 21, 2022. Paul was born in West New Hempsted New York on December 27, 1929. Paul was 93 years of age at the time of his passing.

Paul is survived by no relatives that could be located at the time of this printing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Anne and his "older brother" George. Paul spent his young life as a resident of Herriman Farm School in Moncey, New York. He graduated High School then remained at the Farm School assisting with building and grounds maintenance from 1946 until he enlisted in the Marines on October 4, 1948, at New York, New York.

Staff Sergeant Paul Sanchuk served in the Marine Fighter Squadron 232, Marine Aircraft Group 15 Aircraft, Fleet Marine Force Pacific MCAS out of Camp El Tore Santa Ana California ascending to the rank of Sergeant on May 22, 1951.  Paul served two deployments in the Korean War and was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, a UN Service Ribbon and a Korean Service Medal. Paul was a Proud Marine that never spoke of his service but displayed this pride everywhere throughout his home. Paul was Honorably Discharged on January 30, 1953.

Paul settled in Glenwood upon the completion of his service to take a job with the Glenwood School for Boys (Currently Glenwood Academy) as Dean of Boys. A position he excelled in as witnessed by the many letters from former students that Paul kept and many, he maintained communicating with over the years. Paul eventually left the school to take a position with the Village of Glenwood.

Paul was hired as the Superintendent of Public Works in 1972. Paul was always known for his ability to fix almost anything and his cost-conscious methods of providing service to the residents. Paul voluntarily took on the task of "Dog Catcher" early on in his career as he saw the need. Eventually Paul retired as Public Works Superintendent in 1990 and assumed the role of Animal Control Officer of the Glenwood Police Department, a post he held until just a few months ago.

Paul was always involved in community events and projects and will be missed as we celebrate a Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony without his special hot chocolate!  Paul will be missed as well by the thousands of animals that he assisted over the years.
