Nancy Jane Maddock

Nancy Maddock lived life with a curious heart, a contagious laugh, and an unshakable devotion to faith, family, and fun. For 61 years, she and her beloved husband, George Albert Maddock, built a beautiful life—one brimming with shared giggles, Sunday dinners, and daily reminders of steadfast love.

Nancy was a proud Evanston native who found her purpose in serving others. After graduating from St. Athanasius Grade School and Marywood High School, she continued her studies at St. Mary's College. It was there, during her freshman year, that Nancy met George, a freshman at Notre Dame—sparking a love story that would over six decades. Days after their 1963 graduation, they married and embarked on a Navy adventure that included stops in San Diego, Newport, Rhode Island, and three pregnancies along the way. Later, George's career with the Keebler Company kept them on the move. Nine addresses in 11 years offered Nancy countless opportunities to forge friendships and live out her calling as a joyful ambassador of faith, family, and fun.

Together Nancy and George raised four children—William (Lisa), Michael (was married to the late Ruthie and now engaged to Tina), David, and Ellen (John Tobin)—cheering them on through every dream and detour. Her six grandchildren (Greta, Gunnar, Allison, Riva, Cody, and Ryan) and two sisters (Mary Lou Armel and Susan Haley [Phil]) were all companions in the joyful journey she helped cultivate.

A voracious reader who never met a book she didn't want to crack open, Nancy also held an endless fascination with her faith, ever leaning into Mark 9:24: "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!" She loved The Carpenters and believed, in her bright, hopeful way, that "We've only just begun" was more than a melody—it was a promise of everlasting joy.

Nancy's greatest hits were always rooted in the people she loved, from cheering at family gatherings to turning any moment into a reason to celebrate. Her laughter could fill a room and spill out into the world, reminding everyone around her that there's magic in shared stories, heartfelt hugs, and moments of inspired wonder.

In heaven, Nancy is surely waiting with open arms, ready to fill eternity with that same laughter and a warm embrace for those she loves—and for those of us still here, "We've only just begun."
