Nancy had a very full and enjoyable life. She loved her family, friends, sports, music, traveling, and entertaining. Nancy grew up on the Southeast Side of Chicago. She attended such schools as Robert Taylor and Academy of Our Lady. She worked downtown until she met Paul through the Rolaline Bowling Alley. They married and had two wonderful children, Billy and Annie. She was a stay-at-home mom during the early years. During summers, Nancy and Paul would throw Billy and Annie in the blue van and drive cross-country for family adventures. She also took Annie to Hammond Roller Dome with her childhood friend Jenny. She took Billy to Little league. She also registered both kids in the Scouts. On weekends she would spend time doing hair and playing Yahtzee with Ceil and Dolores with Annie in tow. Paul was off taking Billy, Jimmy, and Russell to sports and fishing shows or flea markets. She was active with Gallistel School on Ewing Avenue and was the PTA President. She lobbied for and was successful at having the school rehabilitated.
Nancy had faith in God. While she was raising her children, she was a member of St. Francis DeSales Church on the East Side. She made sure her kids were brought up in the eyes of God. They were baptized, enrolled in catechism, granted First Holy Communion, and Confirmed.
She then moved on and worked at Chicago Steel and Pickling (CSP) then pursued a real estate license. She started her real estate career at Parker-Holsman in Hyde Park and eventually with her friend, Steve Wardian, started Midway Management. Many family members of Steve Wardian and Nancy had spent office time there. They had several successful years as business partners before both retiring.
Nancy touched many lives. She loved entertaining and her holiday traditions. Thanksgiving was with family and she often invited friends in need of a place to celebrate. Nancy with her Golden Turkey and Dressing, Paul doing the carving with an apprentice, Barbara with the perfect gravy, Jeannine mashing potatoes, and Kay tending to cranberries, rolls, and the pies brought as well. After dinner, Nancy would tickle the ivories on the piano and we would all sing Christmas carols. Her New Year's Day party was epic, filling people up with pea soup and chili to 'clean them out for the New Year.' Football would be on and card games would be played. Chris, Sue, Karen, and Jeannine were skilled contenders of 'Nertz'.
Nancy loved her sports, she liked watching the Bears and Cubs but most of all her bowling and bowling team: Dolores, Mary, Margie, Pam, Mary F, Fran, Mary K, and Ruth just to name a few. She had many fun times with the teams at Rolaline and Olympia Lanes. Bowling wasn't enough for Nancy. She also loved her golf. Whoever you were, she golfed with you (Kevin and Phil). A highlight of her year was getting out of Chicago winter and traveling with Paul to Arizona and playing golf with Jim and Vy.
Travel was an additional passion. Too many places to name them all but they included golf trips, fishing, whitewater rafting, longboating, toboggining, bowling tournaments, family reunions, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, camel riding…the list is endless.
While Nancy was a fantastic cook, she and Paul had quite the appetite and experienced 'fine dining.' Special places they would visit included Rupcich, Lion's Den, Phil Schmidt's, Lauer's Pub, Bob and Jack's Pizza, Purple Steer, Denny's, Red Lobster, Tony Romo's, Jack Gibbon's Gardens, Aunt Sally's and Ted's.
In her 'downtime,' Nancy would love to watch movies, crochet, or work on scrubbies that everyone looked forward to receiving at Christmas. However, her favorite was coffee klatsching with Kay, Barbara, Betty, and Diane Adkins or hanging out in Kay's backyard in the pool back in the day.
Nancy spent her last 3-1/2 years at Sunrise of Flossmoor, known as 'Nancy with the Hat' or 'Fancy Nancy'. She was happy to join the activities. She was in charge of movie night and recorded the names of residents who attended. She participated in Bingo, chair exercises, holiday brunches, dance parties, and of course Margarita Mondays. She looked forward to playing Yahtzee with Kay, Mary Kay, Laura, and Annie. Also her weekday visits from Kay and Bill and drop-ins from Debbie, Jeannine, Tess, and Jason. Sunday was the day to get her nails done by Mary Kay and nosh on shrimp and chicken from Bill. The balloons and flowers Bill brought was also a special touch. Nancy appreciated the staff that cared for her on a daily basis.
Nancy had a full and glorious life filled with those she loved and those who loved her back, almost too many to mention. Let's celebrate her and may she rest in peace.
