Mildred Louise Boggs (née Wurtman), 103, of Homewood, Illinois, passed away on April 1, 2026. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great‑grandmother, she will be remembered for her caring spirit, her curiosity, her stories, her love of crafts, and the passion she brought to everything she cherished.
Born on February 12, 1923, in Harvey, Illinois, Mildred was the only child of Edith (née Haines) and Robert E. Wurtman. She graduated from Thornton High School, Thornton Junior College (South Suburban College), and Iowa State University, earning a degree in dietetics. Throughout her career, she worked in hospitals and schools, sharing her knowledge and commitment to health and nutrition with countless people.
On November 14, 1953, Mildred married the love of her life, George E. Boggs, in Harvey. Together they made their home in Homewood and raised three children — a daughter followed by twin sons. Mildred and George shared a deep love of travel, visiting all 50 states and many destinations abroad. Mildred also nurtured a lifelong interest in genealogy and was an enthusiastic fan of football and basketball. She enjoyed crafts of all kinds, but knitting was her constant creative companion. In later years, she became a dedicated computer solitaire player, delighting in the quiet challenge it offered.
Mildred is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann; her son, James (Melody); her daughter‑in‑law, Frances Schrader; her granddaughters, Lauren (Marcus) Boggs- Berdy and Abby Boggs; and her great‑granddaughter, Ella. She was preceded in death by her husband, George E. Boggs, Sr., and her son, George E. Boggs, Jr.
A Celebration of Life will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church in Flossmoor, Illinois, on September 26, 2026, at 1 p.m. A service and interment of her ashes will follow. Visitation will take place 30 minutes before the service at the church.
