Mary Ann (née Forrest) Smith
Grief is the price you pay for love.
— Peter J. Smith
Mary Ann was born in Brooklyn, NY, to Selina (née Bourke) and Thomas Forrest. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Peter and by her siblings Selina,Thomas, James, and John. A proud alumna of Brookdale Community College in New Jersey, Mary Ann was industrious from an early age, rising in the wee hours to commute by train to a
bakery when she was just fourteen, and later working for Wall Street firm Wagner Stott.
She was even once a sought-after shoe model, graced with a perfect size four.
Mary Ann was an indispensable partner in the missionary work of her brother, Father
Tom Forrest, CSsR. This labor of love saw her helping organize a world-wide retreat for
priests in Rome, and interacting with Saint John Paul II and Saint Teresa of Calcutta.
Mary Ann was a devoted wife and mother; a thick-as-thieves friend to Barbara Carlin and
Pat Merrill; and the wiliest of Scrabble opponents for her son, Bryan. An impish soul,
Mary Ann remained feisty to the end. She was a mom's mom. A good and faithful
Catholic. And always, at heart, a gritty, witty, loving kid from Brooklyn.
Mary Ann is survived by her children Terence and Diana (née Martinez) Smith, and
Bryan Smith and Jenny Quila; her four grandchildren Benjamin Dingledine, Calahan
Smith, Clare Smith, and Frances Smith; her nieces Maria (née Smith) Caffrey and Tara
Smith, and nephew John D. Forrest; and her sisters-in-law Anna (née Corrado) Smith and
Suzanne (née DeWald) Forrest.
Be not afraid. I go before you always.
Come, follow me, and I will give you rest.
— Bob Dufford
