Martin D. Coghlan

Martin David Coghlan, born September 26, 1940 in Chicago, passed away on December 30, 2024, surrounded by his loving wife and daughters. Beloved husband of 13 years to Claudia Cannon, devoted father of Susan (Hugh Cotter), Lisa (Paul Dolan) and Laura (Ric Bianchi).  Adored Papa of his seven grandchildren: Jack (Chloe), Caitlin, Emma, Aidan, Giovanni, Oliver and Natasha.  Predeceased by parents John Patrick and Catherine (Lyons) Coghlan, brothers John P. Coghlan and James L. Coghlan, and sister Mary Lucille Coghlan.  Survived by his sister Catherine "Tis" Cook (Reston, VA) and many, many beloved nieces and nephews.

A dedicated husband and family man, Martin was a fierce friend and when necessary, a formidable foe.  His acts of kindness and generosity in and out of the courtroom were legendary and often uncredited.  Martin regularly used his professional knowledge and experience to help others, founding the South Suburban Bar Association's Pro Bono Program in 1988.

Martin (formerly David Martin) graduated from DePaul University College of Law in 1964.   He was an Associate at Coghlan and Joyce until 1972, the year he founded his own law firm which eventually became Petrich, Coghlan and Stevens.  In 1980 Martin established a solo practice, continuing to specialize in criminal defense and personal injury.  Appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court in 2007 as a Judge to the Circuit Court of Cook County, Martin served until his term ended in 2012.
