Marietta Alice Burke nee Lynch, 85, of Homewood, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2025. She was born on May 6, 1940, in Chicago and lived in different parts of Chicago and the south suburbs her whole life. Her loving husband, John L. Burke, passed away on October 30, 2024, and her son, Patrick J. Burke, passed away on August 14, 2011. She is survived by her son Casey, daughters Brigid and Oona, and her grandchildren Kaelah, Jonas, Liam, and Wesley. Casey was with her at the time of her death at home. He had been her primary caretaker since the death of her husband.
Marietta met John while working at the University of Chicago in the late 60s. He had been a Maryknoll priest at the time, and she was working in the chaplain's office. It was quite the love story! They married on October 2, 1971, and had 53 years of marriage together. Marietta spent several years as a stay-at-home mother when the children were young, always volunteering for a variety of organizations in Rogers Park. Once her children were older, she worked in schools, specializing in special education. She also served as a substitute teacher in schools throughout the south suburban area, where she touched the lives of countless students. Marietta also taught many adults English at night at Prairie State College in the late 80s and early 90s.
Marietta was a devoted member of her church community, actively participating in various programs and initiatives. She volunteered for Respond Now, collecting toys during the Christmas season to bring joy to children in need. Marietta was also an integral member of the Peacemakers, a quilting group, and participated in TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly), where she found support and friendship. Her passion for reading and love of community led her to help form St. John Neuman's Book Club, where she fostered a love for literature among its members. She loved to read.
Marietta's legacy of kindness, dedication, and love for her family and community will be remembered by all who knew her. She leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories that will continue to inspire those she touched. The family will hold a memorial mass to celebrate her life at St. John Neumann Church, 17951 Dixie Hwy., Homewood, IL 60430 on Friday September 26 at 10:30am. Interment to follow at Assumption Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers memorials to respondnow.org in her name. Burial of John and Marietta will follow the mass.
