Margaret "Peggy" Mcfarland

Margaret "Peggy" McFarland (Barry), age 84, of Homer Glen, IL, (formerly of Flossmoor) passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Peggy was born on September 14, 1940, in Chicago, IL, to Michael and Anastatia Barry (Fitzgerald). She graduated from Mercy High School and later earned a degree in education. A passionate and dedicated educator, Peggy spent 25 years shaping young minds in the elementary classroom. Her patience, warmth, and love of learning left a lasting impact on generations of students.

Beyond the classroom, Peggy was a devoted volunteer, giving generously of her time and energy to organizations including PADS, POA, St. Vincent de Paul, the Cancer Support Center, the North Lawndale Student Kinship Project, and Old St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Her faith and compassion guided her actions, and her service to others was a cornerstone of her life.

On June 30, 1962, Peggy married the love of her life, Thomas McFarland Sr. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised four children. Family was everything to Peggy—her greatest joy was found in the company of those she loved. Whether hosting lively family gatherings or cheering on her grandchildren from the sidelines, she cherished every moment.

Peggy was known for her adventurous spirit and love of "once in a lifetime" experiences—both her own and those she encouraged others to pursue. Despite her South Side roots, she remained a loyal Cubs fan through and through.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Thomas McFarland Sr., and their children: Kathleen (Luke) Larocca, Thomas Jr. (Kristy) McFarland, Barry (Pauline) McFarland, and Matthew (Rebecca) McFarland. She was the proud and beloved "Pima" to eight grandchildren: Laura Larocca, Luke Thomas Larocca, Caroline Larocca, Madison (Scott) Uher, Kayla McFarland, Charlotte McFarland, Rachel McFarland, and Maggie McFarland; and one great-grandson, Brady Uher. She is also survived by her siblings: Kathleen Thermos, Michael Barry, and Therese Power.

Peggy was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Riley Larocca, who held a special place in her heart.

A wake will be held on Thursday May 22, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. at Old St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 700 West Adams Street, Chicago, IL 60661.

Funeral Parking At Old St. Patrick's Church As we are a downtown church, parking during the week is always a challenge. However, there are several surface lots available within a block and the 625 W. Adams building (kitty corner from church) has a parking garage as well. With school being in session, street parking is just not available (except possibly for the hearse and 1 or 2 cars in front of church.) Please advise your guests and family members to park in a lot.
