Laura E. Vanbuskirk

Laura E. VanBuskirk, age 73, of Naperville, IL passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2024. Born November 27, 1950 to Maxine Klasey and Francis Boyd VanBuskirk. She grew up in Chicago Heights, IL and was a graduate of Homewood-Flossmoor High School and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

After her graduation from the University of Illinois, Laura moved east with her longtime partner, Bill. In 1976 they became a part of summer-stock in New London, New Hampshire, with Laura as the musical director. There she enhanced her musical abilities and developed lifelong friendships. Eventually Laura moved to Manhattan, continuing to work in the musical and theater field.

After multiple years out east, Laura moved to the other coast and settled in Long Beach, California. After moving to California, she and Bill adopted a dog, Eddie, who made it a habit of sleeping in their laundry and stealing empty tuna cans to finish what was left. He was a loyal companion to Laura, especially after the passing of Bill. Eventually, Laura made her way back to Illinois in 1995.

Laura had a knack for anything related to music. She was an experienced pianist, who enjoyed teaching others, including her niece, the instrument. Throughout her life she continued to perform and sing regularly, including in her church choir. She was often complimented for her voice and that she "could sing like an angel". She loved musical theatre and would regularly attend performances in Chicago.

Laura loved to teach, volunteer, and help those who were in need. She regularly volunteered her time teaching people to read and helped with the Special Olympics Illinois. She also loved to travel, taking annual trips throughout the country.

Laura is preceded in death by her parents Maxine and Francis Boyd VanBuskirk; her sister Helen VanBuskirk; and her partner William Baldwin. She is survived by her older brother, John, and her younger sister, Julia. She was a devoted Aunt to Sara (Chris) Roberts and a beloved Great-Aunt to Emmett and Ava Roberts. Her death has left a void that cannot be filled.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
