Kenneth W. Herkert

Kenneth "Ken" Walter Herkert, 96, of Glenwood, passed away on June 11, 2025. Born October 10, 1928 in Milwaukee WI, and raised in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. In the great circle of life, he passed away at the University of Chicago Medical Center only 6 blocks from where he grew up.

Ken is survived by his devoted wife of 70 years and the love of his life, Arlene, and his children Kimberly (Eduardo) Parra, Laura (Doug) Shumock, Brian (Rebecca) Herkert and Pamela (Randy) Van Niel. He was a proud and loving "Papa" to eight grandchildren: Kevin (Katie) Herkert, Shannon Herkert, Nicole (Joe) Mayer, Delaney Herkert, Justin Van Niel, Taylor (Nick) Sweet, Blake Van Niel, and Dr. Savannah (Freddy) Paulenich. He also had four great grandchildren that loved their Papa, Theodore (Theo) Herkert, Emma Herkert, Shea Mayer and Rowan Sweet.

Ken attended Mount Carmel High School and was drafted during the Korean War. After, he obtained a degree from DePaul University through the GI Bill. He loved growing up in Chicago and he took his family to the many art fairs, Maxwell Street fair on Sundays, and bike rides along the lake front, even before there were bike paths. He also enjoyed the outdoors. Family trips always included camping, usually to Wisconsin or Tennessee. His cottage in Michigan provided great memories for family and friends. His grandkids loved going to "PaPa's" lake.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends who will remember him as a humble man of great character.
