Joyce I Janowick

Longtime Homewood resident Joyce Janowick passed away peacefully on May 26th at the age of 79.

Joyce was born and grew up in Chicago, IL, attending St. John Berchman's Grammar School and Alvernia High School. She graduated from St. Anne's Hospital School of Nursing in 1962, where she was president of her nursing class. Joyce served as a nurse for almost 50 years at various hospitals in the Chicagoland area until she retired in 2010. For the last 10 years of her career, Joyce was a hospice nurse for Vitas Innovative Hospice Care. Joyce's compassion was evident in every facet of her life, as a nurse and as a wife and mother.

Joyce and her husband Jerry raised their family of five children in Homewood, IL. Joyce was a dedicated member of St. Joseph's Parish for almost 50 years, actively engaged in liturgy planning, serving as a minister of communion, and volunteering for events at the church and school. She organized community blood drives for a number of years, and was a staple participant and volunteer in other community forums. Joyce was an avid baseball fan, and particularly loved attending each of her son's many baseball games at Izaak Walton while they were growing up. Joyce enjoyed prayer, church events, Chicago sports, Elvis, puzzles, cards, and most of all, spending time with family and friends. Joyce was especially close to her beloved "little sister", Jeanie, as well as dear friends from St. Joseph's Church with whom she had been close for decades.

While Joyce suffered from various health issues over the past 15 years, most would not know of her suffering…Joyce was joyful, optimistic, and spirited – always a smile on her face. At every turn in her medical journey, Joyce surprised her doctors time and time again by her strength and resilience. In more recent years when she couldn't get around as much, she thoroughly enjoyed participating in any and all activities Sunrise Assisted Living had to offer -- bingo, movie night, games, crafts, yoga, costume party -- you name it, mom was in! She made every effort to stay connected with friends on Facebook, and one would know when she was online given a flurry of "likes", sometimes for pictures and posts years old.

Joyce joins Jerry, her beloved husband of 39 years (predeceased) and her parents Bob and Lois Manthie (predeceased) in heaven. She is survived by many that loved her here on earth: son Jeff Janowick (Michelle Detering); son Bob Janowick (Tara Bell); daughter Julia Campbell; son Dan Janowick (Amanda Kammes); son Joe Janowick; sister Jean Marshall (predeceased Joe); brother Bob Manthie (Nancy); grandchildren Joshua, William, Tod and Bailey; cousins; nieces; nephews; and countless friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the S ociety of St. Vincent de Paul through St. Joseph's Church in Homewood, or the Dominican Sisters at Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, are appreciated. For additional information contact tews-ryanfh.com or call 708-798-5300.
