Joseph Alan Zulfer, age 96, of Flossmoor, Illinois and Ft. Myers, Florida. Beloved husband of the late Joan Zulfer, nee Sujack. Beloved father of Mary (Bruce) Bukiet, Catherine Zulfer, Carolyn (Steven) Molinets, Joan (William) Deplewski, Joseph Zulfer, and the late Jerry Zulfer. Cherished grandfather of Laura (Jon) Knisley, David (Ginny) Bukiet, Lindsay (James) Bukiet, Samuel Zulfer, Elizabeth and Thomas Molinets, Jennifer Quirk, Julie (James) Hefner, Amanda and Zachary Deplewski. Adored GreatGrandfather of Cole, Clark, Frank, Emily, Ashton, Memphis, Mason, and Maddie. Dear uncle (aka Gunk) of Stephen (Maureen) Sujack, Donald (Peg) Sujack, Gregory (Kate) Sujack, and Julie Sujack.
Joe was born in Oak Park, Illinois. He enjoyed reading and baseball as a child. He went to Oak Park High School where he played on the baseball team. During high school Joe's family moved to Davenport, Iowa. He continued to play baseball at his new high school and was a catcher for his state championship team. In 1945, during WWII, Joe joined the Navy. After discharge from the Navy, he went back to University of Iowa. Joe graduated in 1948, and headed to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Master's from Wharton. After Wharton, he went on to earn his CPA. In 1966, Joe became a partner in the accounting firm of Ernest and Young. After retirement from Ernst, Joe began working for Lake Mortgage. He worked part-time until 2021.
Joe married Joan Sujack on September 5, 1953. Joe and Joan enjoyed golf, travel, and their family. They had a long and loving marriage until Joan's death in 2016. Joe was a member of Flossmoor Country Club and The Forest Country Club. He loved golf and had a lifelong obsession to improving his game. Luckily, Joe was able to play golf into his nineties, so he had plenty of time to work on it. Joe was an intelligent, humorous, and interesting man who loved his family, University of Iowa, the White Sox, the Bears and golf. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation on October 19, 3:00-7:00 at TewsRyan Funeral Home, 18230 Dixie Highway in Homewood. Memorial Mass on October 20, 11:30 at Infant Jesus of Prague Church, 1120 Douglas Avenue, Flossmoor Illinois.
