Joseph J. O'Gallagher

Joseph J. O'Gallagher, age 83, of Flossmoor, IL. Beloved husband of Ellen O'Gallagher, nee Blie.  Loving father of Jim (former spouse Pam) O'Gallagher and Brian (Judy) O'Gallagher.  Cherished grandfather of Matthew, Kevin, Timothy, Katharine M. and Daniel O'Gallagher.  Dear brother of Mary (Tom) Powers, James (Helene) O'Gallagher, Ellen O'Gallagher, and Abbie (Ken Sewell) O'Gallagher, and beloved brother-in-law of Lynn (Ben) Brand.   Fond uncle, cousin and friend to many.  Joe was an honors graduate of Mount Carmel High School and was admitted to the Mount Carmel Hall of Fame in 2017.    He earned a B.S. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago.  Joe was a physicist who held positions with the University of Maryland, the Max Planck Institute (in Munich, Germany), and Argonne National Laboratory, but who spent the majority of his career at the University of Chicago, where he was the Executive Officer of the Department of Physics, Senior Lecturer and Senior Scientist, and where he retired from in 2005. During his career, Joe specialized in space physics and solar energy research.  Outside of work, Joe enjoyed reading, traveling, music, movies, following current events and spending time with his family.  A visitation is scheduled for Friday, July 28, from 3-8pm at the Tews-Ryan Funeral Home in Homewood, Illinois. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Convent of the Holy Spirit, located at 319 Waukegan Road in Northfield, IL.
