Joseph B. Hughes

Joseph (Joe) Barry Hughes, age 59, passed away on June 22, 2026, in Chicago, Illinois.

Born on July 9, 1966, he was the beloved son of Robert and Eleanor Hughes. Raised in Olympia Fields, Illinois, Joe cherished his childhood and school years that were filled with close friends, soccer, high school theater, and a healthy dose of lighthearted shenanigans. He went on to graduate from the University of Illinois ( Champaign-Urbana) with a degree in business and built a successful early career as a mortgage bond trader, a professional achievement that made his family incredibly proud.

Above all else, Joe's greatest pride and joy was being a father to his daughters, Maggie (Craig) Olsen and Molly Hughes. He loved them deeply, and his vibrant spirit and love for animals lives on in them. He was also a cherished brother to Jeanne (Scott) Ummel, and a loving uncle to Liam, Louisa and Nathaniel. He also leaves behind his beloved dog Lady that was his constant companion and by his side at all times.

For much of his adult life, Joe fought a deeply courageous battle with a persistent illness. While this disease brought immense challenges, it could never erase the brilliant, kind, and resilient man he truly was underneath. Even during his most difficult challenges, Joe found solace in his passion for World War II history, always keeping a book nearby and never losing the quick wit and humor that defined him.

Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Jeff Hughes, as well as his grandparents Wales S. and Eleanor Stamper.

Services and interment will be held privately. The family deeply appreciates your love, support, and respect for their privacy during this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Joe's honor to the following organizations that provided him with great comfort and support: www.gatewayfoundation.org , www.thresholds.org , www.thenightministry.org or https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/il/chicago/ .
