Joseph (Joe) Allen Halliday, 67, of Flossmoor, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 19. Joe was born on November 14, 1957, in Evergreen Park. He was the second of four children to Robert L. and Margaret A. (Kummerer) Halliday. He grew up in Chicago Heights and Flossmoor.
He was an alumnus of Homewood-Flossmoor High School (1974) and the University of Illinois (1979). Joe was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. After graduation, he lived in Atlanta and New Orleans.
Joe returned to Flossmoor to co-found Phoenix Railway Equipment Company with his father. After nearly 40 years, Phoenix was more than a livelihood, the business was a legacy – something he proudly passed on to his beloved son, Ryan, who carries forward his father's dream and values.
He cherished being a father and devoted countless hours as a coach for his children's teams, teaching not just the game but also the values of teamwork, perseverance, and respect. He enthusiastically cheered for the Illini, Blackhawks, Sky, White Sox, and Bears –traveling to the 2005 Final Four and 2008 Rose Bowl to cheer on the Illini basketball and football teams. He was an avid tennis fan, attending Wimbledon and the US Open with his sons. He savored every aspect of the Chicago area's offerings, including cycling, tennis, golfing, and walking forest preserves. He treasured spending time with his sons in Chicago, preserving American flags, visiting museums, and maintaining his lifelong passion for learning. Joe enjoyed his time as a member of Olympia Fields Country Club.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee. He is survived by his sons, Clark and Ryan (Allison), and was excited for the arrival of his first grandchild in early 2026; mother, Margaret "Peg"; siblings, Rob (Sue), Jim (Barbara), and Julie Bonner (Tom); and nieces and nephews, Laura Galante (Tihomir), James Galante (Joanna), Rob Halliday (Rosie), Paul Halliday, Marie La Barbera (Chris), Elizabeth Halliday (Nick), and Peter Halliday. Also was survived by the mother of his children, Laura. Joe had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel valued and loved. His kindness and genuine heart leave a lasting impression that will be felt for generations.
