Joan Newman Kikoen, "Joanie," our beloved and cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, entered into eternal life on March 10, 2025, at the age of 92. She was surrounded by family and at peace.
Affectionately known as "Joanie Babes" to so many, she was a gifted pianist, a beautiful singer, and a masterful crocheter of afghans. In her professional life, she brought her exceptional talents to the construction industry as an exemplary executive secretary, worked at the University of Chicago as an instructional assistant, dedicated several years to Boca International, and spent many cherished and passionate years with the Chicago Heights Drama Group.
Joan attended the University of Illinois at Champaign where she met the love of her life, Eugene Kikoen. Together, "Joanie Babes" and "Gene-o" shared 56 wonderful years of marriage, raising four children and building a legacy that continues through their three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom will deeply and dearly miss this remarkable and loving woman.
A teacher, mentor, counselor, and best friend to all who had the privilege of knowing her, Joan was also a devoted patron of the Lyric Opera of Chicago where she and Gene held season tickets each year, relishing their shared love of music, theatre, and the arts.
Now reunited with her beloved Gene, Joan is survived by her loving and devoted children: Steven (Heidi) Kikoen, David (Rita) Kikoen, Chana Susan Kikoen (Moshe) Turner, and James Kikoen; her adoring grandchildren Cameron (Victoria) Kikoen, Alexis (Nick) Kikoen, and Michael Kikoen; her cherished great-grandchildren Evelyn Kikoen and Sophia Kikoen; and a vast network of beloved relatives and dear friends.
Joan was a remarkable woman whose presence left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Her radiant smile was contagious, her beauty unmatched, and her charismatic personality effortlessly drew people in. Above all, her genuine kindness and unwavering care for family and friends—both lifelong and newly found—were nothing short of extraordinary.
