Joan Marie Flanagan, 79, respected author, fundraising pioneer, devoted church member, and beloved friend, passed away on September 24, 2026.
Growing up in Flossmoor, Illinois, Joan attended Denison University and went on to become one of the nonprofit sector’s most influential voices and is perhaps best known as the author of Grassroots Fundraising, a groundbreaking work that helped countless organizations understand that successful fundraising is built on relationships, community engagement, and a shared belief in mission. Long before community-based philanthropy became a widely embraced concept, Joan championed the idea that ordinary people, working together, could create extraordinary impact.
Throughout her distinguished career, Joan authored numerous books and articles, advised nonprofit leaders, and spoke to audiences around the world. Her practical guidance, thoughtful insights, and unwavering belief in the power of generosity shaped the careers of countless development professionals, nonprofit executives, board members, and volunteers. Through her writing, speaking, and consulting, Joan inspired countless organizations and individuals to advance their missions and strengthen their communities.
Joan was a loving sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and great-aunt, and a cherished friend to many. Her warmth, encouragement, and unwavering belief in the potential of others left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Her legacy lives on through the organizations she strengthened, the people she mentored, and the countless lives enriched by her work and friendship. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remember.
