James C. Van Vlymen

James C. Van Vlymen, 75, of Homewood, passed away Friday, April 18, 2025, at his home.

Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial visitation will be held at 2:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m., on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at Tews-Ryan Funeral Home in Homewood, IL.

James was born on June 20, 1949, in Evergreen Park, the son of Cecil J. and Dorothy M. (Gernert) Van Vlymen. He graduated from Homewood-Flossmoor High School in 1967 and went on to attend Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, NE. It was there he met the love of his life, Patricia K. Foust. They were married on May 29, 1971, in Council Bluffs, IA.

After college, James returned to the Chicagoland area to join the family business, Southgate Distributing, eventually taking over the company after his father's passing.

James grew up with a deep love for the water—boating and scuba diving were early passions. He was an adventurer at heart who took his family on countless journeys, from camping in the mountains to soaking up the sun on the beach. He especially loved exploring trails on four-wheelers and hunting for shells with his family.

A gifted cook, James passed down his love for the kitchen to all his children. He was famous in the family for his smoked ribs and homemade barbecue sauce—an art he perfected over the years.

James was a devoted family man who supported his loved ones in every endeavor. He rarely missed a chance to cheer on his children and grandchildren in their sporting events, whether in person, online, or through video. He often made sure the whole team was well fed, preparing sandwiches between games or organizing world-class tailgates. From 1984 to 1991, he volunteered as an assistant scoutmaster for Boy Scouts of America Troop 364, always ready to lend his time, skills, and heart to others.

James had a remarkable ability to teach those around him—especially his children and grandchildren—the value of attention to detail. He instilled in them a deep appreciation for doing things the right way, and that legacy lives on in their continued success.

More than anything, James will be remembered for his sense of humor, which his grandchildren adored. His laughter, generosity, and love will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia; his children, Rochelle Van Vlymen, James (Holly) Van Vlymen, and Kirsten (Jesus) Vargas; and five beloved grandchildren: Daniel, Skye, Luke, Logan, and Jayden. He is also survived by the family's loyal yellow lab, Koda Kay—his partner in crime.
