Irma Louise Hansel, 99, lived a long and remarkable life shaped by resilience, hard work, a love of family, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.
Born and raised in Germany, Irma came of age during World War II. She attended college to study secretarial work and began her career with the Hoechst Company. After the war, she worked at General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s headquarters, where she met the man who would become her husband, Joseph Hansel.
At just 22 years old, Irma made the courageous decision to leave her homeland and begin a new life in the United States. Together, she and Joseph built a life and a family, creating a legacy rooted in dedication, perseverance, and love.
Irma was a hardworking woman who took pride in everything she did. She spent many years working as the bookkeeper and assembling padlocks for Hansel Manufacturing. Work was an important part of her life, and she approached it with the same determination and commitment that defined so much of who she was.
When she wasn't working, Irma could often be found in her yard, tending to her beloved garden and flowers. Her garden was a special place where she found happiness and peace, and she took great pride in caring for it.
Irma was also a talented musician who brought joy to family gatherings through her love of music. She often played the piano or accordion at family parties, creating special memories and bringing everyone together. Her music was another way she shared her love with those around her, adding a special warmth and happiness to family celebrations.
Above all, Irma cherished her family. She especially treasured time spent with her son, Jimmy, daughter-in-law Marie, and her two grandchildren, Matthew and Emilie. She loved speaking German with her grandchildren, sharing a special part of her heritage and keeping the language of her childhood alive in the next generation. In later years, she happily welcomed Matthew's partner, Jessica, and Emilie's husband, Patrick, into the family she loved so dearly.
Irma also had a special place in her heart for animals, reflecting her caring and compassionate nature.
Irma's life spanned nearly a century and included extraordinary changes, new beginnings, and countless memories. From growing up in wartime Germany to building a home and family in America, she demonstrated courage, independence, and an unwavering work ethic. She will be remembered for her strength, her love of gardening, her devotion to her family, and the unique traditions and memories she leaves behind.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Irma's memory to the South Suburban Humane Society or the East Hazel Crest Volunteer Fire Department, two organizations that reflect causes close to her heart.
Irma's long life was a testament to resilience, family, and the enduring power of love. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
