Gerald Allen Bendle

Gerald Allen Bendle, born April 21, 1932, to Elden Dale Bendle and Albertha Kross Bendle, passed away peacefully on August 29th, 2025.

Raised in a large and lively household, Jerry was one of thirteen children, growing up alongside his brothers and sisters: Raymond (Ray), Eldon (Toomie), Joyce Reinecke, LaVonna (Bonnie) Sublett, Barbara Wiegel, Kenneth, Robert, Elizabeth (Betty) Hedrick, Charles (Chuck), Larry, John, and Susanne (Sue) Passen. The values of hard work, resilience, and devotion to family that were instilled in him during these early years remained guiding principles throughout his life.

A proud veteran, Jerry served in the United States Air Force from January 12, 1952, until June 15, 1956. Honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant, he distinguished himself in service, earning the Bronze Star and other commendations during two tours in the Korean Conflict, flying with the 95th Bomb Squadron. His years in uniform were marked by dedication to duty and deep pride in his country and sparked his life-long love of travel.

Jerry married Judith Ellen Caress on September 7th, 1959.

Following his military service, Jerry worked on the Illinois Central Railroad before pursuing higher education at Bradley University. His passion for teaching led him to a career in the Thornton School District, where he inspired countless students while continuing his own education. He later earned his master's degree in education from the University of Illinois, embodying the lifelong learner he encouraged others to be.

Jerry shared his life with his beloved wife, Judy, who preceded him in death on January 31, 2019. Together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and enduring commitment. Their legacy continues through their three children—Scott Allen (wife Regina (decd), partner Kim), Bradley Jay (Teresa), and Amy Lynn (Nick Petrovic) and their cherished grandchildren: Anne Spencer, Erin Nicole, Bradley Jacob, Allen Cole, and Abbigail Renee.

Beyond his professional and family life, Jerry enjoyed the simple pleasures that brought him joy. He was an avid camper, a devoted caretaker of his home and rental properties, and a man who found fulfillment in staying active and engaged with the world around him. He and Judy loved hosting family reunions and work friends at their properties in Michigan and engaging with his neighbors at Village Woods in Crete, Illinois.

Jerry's life was marked by service, dedication, and devotion to family. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on in those who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
