Edward Niemiec, age 95, late of the Veterans Home at Manteno, Illinois. He was the beloved husband of the late Helen Niemiec (nee Korniszewski). Preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Anna, brothers Michael, Frank, Henry, Stanley and Alex, and sisters Hedy and Betty. He was born in Puritan, Portage Township Pennsylvania on November 16, 1930. After graduating from high school his family moved to East Hazel Crest, Illinois. In 1949 Ed volunteered for the United States Air Force serving as a Sergeant and Senior Radar Mechanic. He served with the 37th Troop Carrier Squadron during the Korean War as part of the 314th Troop Carrier Group (Medium), flying missions in C-119 aircraft. Following his honorable discharge in October 1952, Ed returned to Illinois, where he married the love of his life, Helen. The couple shared a life full of travel and transition. In 1973, they moved back to Pennsylvania to live on "The Farm". Their journeys later took them to California and Oregon before Ed ultimately returned to Illinois. Edward's legacy of love lives on through his large extended family. He was a caring and devoted Godfather to many of his countless nieces and nephews who will all forever remember his presence in their lives. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Illinois Veterans Home at Manteno. Visitation Monday June 15, from 3-8pm at the Tews-Ryan Funeral Home, 18230 Dixie Hwy. in Homewood. Funeral Tuesday with 10:15am prayers at the Funeral Home to St. John Neumann Catholic Church (formerly St. Joseph Church) in Homewood for an 11am Mass. Interment to follow with full Military Honors at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois at 1:30pm. For additional information contact Tews-ryanfh.com or call 708-798-5300 .
