Edward H. McDermed passed away December 2, 2023, surrounded by his family in his home. Edward was born on Feb. 13, 1926, in Chicago and is survived by his wife Mary (Buggert) McDermed, son Edward W. McDermed of Homewood, IL, son Paul M. McDermed and daughter-in-law Julie McDermed of Curunna, MI, and son-in-law Bruce Melanson of Homewood, IL, and several nieces and nephews. Edward was preceded in death by his daughter Susan M. Melanson. Loving grandfather to Daniel P. McDermed, James E. McDermed, Thomas A. McDermed, Kyle M. McDermed and Evan P. McDermed.
Ed grew up on the south side of Chicago where he attended Parker High School. At the age of 18, Ed was drafted by the Navy and served two years as the captain of a Patrol Boat around the New Hebrides islands in the South Pacific. After the war Ed was hired by Inland Steel where he worked for 45 years until his retirement in 1991, missing only one day of work due to a blizzard.
Ed was hardworking and a jack of all trades. He built a summer house in Wisconsin and owned a summer house on the Kankakee River near Momence, IL. Ed enjoyed golf well into his retirement years and was a proficient bowler and 16" softball pitcher well into his 60's.
Ed will be remembered for his easygoing nature, and he was a kind and generous father, grandfather, and neighbor. He enjoyed playing pinochle, and he was sharp as a tack playing cards until his last day with us.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday December 27, at 10am at St. John Neumann Parish (formerly St. Joseph Church) in Homewood 17951 Dixie Highway in Homewood. Military honors and entombment will follow at 1 pm at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL. For additional information contact tews-ryanfh.com or call 708-798-5300.
