Catherine "Cissy" Hallberg (née Knuth), age 59, of Beecher, Illinois, passed away peacefully on April 24th, 2025, following recent medical complications. Cathy lived a life full of warmth, laughter, and unwavering love for her family, friends, and community.
She is survived by her loving husband of 25 years, Eric Hallberg, and her beloved sister and best friend, Jennifer (Anthony) Gasbarro. Cathy also leaves behind her brother-in-law, John (Marina) Hallberg, and sister-in-law, Chris (Dave) Berglind. She cherished her role as the fun and loving aunt to Aiden and Kyleigh Gasbarro, Kevin (Sarah), Amanda (Eric Farner), and Kyle (Hannah) Hallberg, as well as Eric, David "Morty", and Jack Berglind. Cathy was a cousin to 20, and a friend to everyone who had the good fortune to meet her.
Born on January 24, 1966, in Chicago, Cathy was raised in Homewood by her parents, Donald and Margaret (née O'Brien) Knuth, who preceded her in death. She attended St. Joseph School, James Hart Junior High, and was a 1984 graduate of Homewood-Flossmoor High School.
Cathy was a constant and loving presence in the lives of her nephew Aiden and niece Kyleigh, never missing a beat—whether it was Scouts, gymnastics, baseball or soccer games, or school events. She attended every field day, pancake breakfast, spaghetti dinner, and Special Person's Day. Her arrival at school events was often met with cheers of "Cissy!" from joyful children, a reflection of the love and admiration she inspired in all who knew her.
A lifelong Girl Scout, Cathy achieved both the First Class and Gold Awards—testaments to her dedication and leadership. Her love for scouting took her as far as London for volunteer work and camp counselor roles. Closer to home, she shared her passion by serving as a troop leader for girls in Homewood, nurturing the next generation with the same kindness and guidance she offered so freely.
Professionally, Cathy most recently served as a Patient Advocate for The Cigna Group, where she made a meaningful impact through her empathy and compassion. Prior to that, she worked as an "information" operator for Illinois Bell/Ameritech/SBC for over two decades. Homewood residents may also fondly remember Cathy as the long time manager of J&B Pizza, where her familiar face and spunky attitude made her a local favorite.
Cathy's life was a true embodiment of generosity, loyalty, and unshakable love. She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished by those whose lives she touched.
A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, May 29th from 11:00 AM until the time of Service at 1:00 PM at Tews-Ryan Funeral Home. Interment will be private. For further information, please contact tews-ryanfh.com or call 708-798-5300
