Carol Yukich was born into eternal life October 2,2022. Her earthly pilgrimage began in Canton, Ohio on July 2,1938. When she was around six years old Carol and her family moved to Chicago. This was the beginning of the positive impact she would make.
Music was a big part of her life. Piano, violin and singing were one of Carol's passions. She was involved in choir at Bloom high school (Chicago Heights) and continued singing as an adult in several church choirs.
Another passion was nursing and education. Her spark for nursing began at Bloom high school. The school nurse highly encouraged Carol to pursue a bachelors of science in nursing at Saint Xavier University. She graduated in 1960 and worked as a staff nurse from 1960 to the early 1970's.
Saint Xavier called again and in 1973 she began her mission of a nurse educator. During her forty-one year tenure (Associate Professor of Nursing) she impacted a countless number of students. In 1991 Carol created the first program of its kind in the state of Illinois for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) to earn a bachelor of science (BS) in nursing and become a registered nurse. This program today continues to help LPN's move forward in their careers.
One of Carol's colleagues said that "Carol was a trailblazer and an expert nurse educator" along with being an advocate for her LPN to RN students. Among her many accolades Carol twice received the Excellence in Teaching Education award from the national honor society of nursing, Sigma Theta Tau.
In 1963 her next passion began. Carol met her future husband, Michael Yukich ( passed October 2022). They married on May 16,1964. From that devoted 58 years of marriage came: Tracy (passed October 2021), Michael George, Tom, Kathleen (fiancé Patrick) and Mark (Dawn).
Carol's legacy of love, education and advocacy will live on. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Saint Xavier University (3700 W 103rd Street
Chicago, IL 60655) in memory of Carol Yukich.
Services for Michael (and Carol) will be held Thursday, October 6th from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at Tews (18230 S. Dixie Highway, Homewood). Funeral Mass will be held Friday at St. Agnes (1501 S. Chicago Road, Chicago Heights) at 11:30 am.
