Arlene Ruth Mayer

Arlene Ruth Mayer (83), of Olympia Fields passed away peacefully on December 17, 2021. She was born to the late Arthur and Olga Ladwig April, 4, 1938 and grew up in Midlothian, IL. She graduated from Bremen High School in 1956. Arlene is survived by her spouse Fred (Duke) Mayer of 63 years, her son Dr. David D. Mayer DDS (Rose), her 3 "favorite" granddaughters Rachel (Michael) Matasar, Michelle Mayer, and Carly Mayer. Duke and Arlene were long time residents of Homewood and most recently Olympia Fields,IL. Arlene had a long career in the dental and medical fields as an assistant/receptionist. She was the primary influence in her son's decision to become a dentist.

Arlene was a fiercely competitive athlete. She was an excellent tennis player and won her share of tournaments in the 70's and 80's in the south suburbs and at HF Racquet Club where they were members for over 45 years. In an effort to improve her endurance for tennis she took up running. Running became her new passion and she became an elite distance runner winning 100's of trophies and medals in 10Ks, the 10 mile, half marathons and marathons. She competed in 7 marathons. In 1989 Arlene ran a sub 3 1/2 hour race at the Chicago Marathon which qualified her for the Boston Marathon. As if that wasn't enough, Arlene had also taken up downhill skiing a few years earlier at 47 years old. Unfortunately, all of the pounding on her knees from tennis, running and skiing took its toll and after 6 knee surgeries she was told she could not continue to participate in these sports any longer. So Arlene at age 60 took up golf and worked on it 7 days a week soon shooting in the 90's. Arlene even had a Hole in One on the 15th hole at Tuckaway Golf Club when she was 68 yrs old.

Arlene was a true people person. She would say hello and strike up a conversation with anyone and everyone. She will be remembered for her beautiful blue eyes, big smile and an even bigger heart. She was the best wife, mother and Nana one could ever ask for. Her tradition of making the best banana meringue pie on every birthday will be so missed.

Arlene's other true passion was her big dogs. Duke and Arlene had 9 wonderful four legged companions in their 63 years together. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the South Suburban Humane Society in Arlene's name.
