Alfred (Fred) Knoll, age 89, of Homewood. Beloved husband of the late Shirlene Knoll. Loving father of Alfred P. Knoll, Daniel J. (Laurie) Knoll, Maria (Jeff) Benner, Joseph Knoll and the late John Michael Knoll. Cherished grandfather of Sarita (AJ), Anna (Ross), Michael, Grace, David, Samantha Grace, Jennifer and John 'Jack'. Great-grandfather of Joe, Sam, Eddie, Nolan, Evie, Noah and Caleb. Dear brother of the late J. Theodore, the late Phillip and Gregory (Cyndie) Knoll. Beloved uncle, cousin, brother-in-law and friend to many.
Fred, a United States Army veteran, was also a proud graduate of Mt. Carmel Catholic High School and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where he met and married his bride, Shirlene. He returned to the south suburbs of Chicago and established Knoll Bros. (Construction) with his brother Ted. He and Shirlene were active parishioners of both St. Joseph and St. Anne Catholic Churches and participated in many philanthropic organizations including Knights of Columbus, Jaycees and multiple prayer groups. Fred was preceded in death by Shirlene and looked forward to their reunion in Heaven. He loved to make people laugh, recall funny stories and win at cards—ideally doing all three at the same time. Fred used to remind his children, "Think about the next guy." He taught them to work hard and "make it nice." Fred could build almost anything and frequently did—including the large indoor wooden crèche for the Nativity Scene at St. Joseph's (now St. John Neumann) Catholic Church. Fred would be embarrassed that the good work he performed and supported were mentioned in public. If you knew or cared about Fred, please offer a prayer for his holy intentions.
